Chocolate Berry Scones

There is nothing like a hot scone out of the oven with a cup of coffee for breakfast ;without paying the "Starbucks price" ;) The sweet dried berries (Cherries or Cranberries) are nicely paired with Chocolate chips; making a very tasty breakfast. It takes only 30 minutes...

What you need?

  •  2 cups Flour
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup or 1 stick of butter ( cold and cut into cubes)
  • 1/2 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon orange zest

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Line the baking tray with parchment paper
  • In a large bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar
  • Blend the butter into the flour mixture with a pastry blender (as you see in the picture)
  • Stir in the chocolate chips and dried berries
  • In a small bowl whisk together the buttermilk and vanilla and orange zest
  • Then add to the flour mixture, (note: not all at once you might not need all the buttermilk)
  • Stir just until the dough comes together (remember it's important not to over mix the dough)
  • Transfer to a lightly floured surface and knead the dough then pat the dough into a circle ( about 6 inches wide and 1-2 inches thick)
  • Cut this circle in half, then cut each half into 4 triangles (like the picture)
  • Place the scones on the baking sheet
  • Brush the tops of the scones with egg wash or a little milk
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes or until they're golden brown
  • Remove from the oven and Enjoy right away OR you can freeze these lovely scones and just warm them up with you wish!
